How to Evaluate Supplement Claims

Start by identifying exactly what is being claimed. Then ask whether the evidence concerns the same ingredient, preparation, dose, population and outcome.

Common evidence traps

Testimonials cannot establish cause and effect. Traditional use is historical context, not a clinical trial. A study of one ingredient does not automatically prove a multi-ingredient finished product works. “FDA registered” is not the same as FDA approval.

FDA states that dietary supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness before marketing; companies are responsible for ensuring safety and truthful labeling.
